Mayor Bowser to Kick Off 2019 Safer, Stronger DC Summer Crime Initiative

Mayor and MPD to Focus Resources to Reduce Violent Crime in Identified DC Neighborhoods

(Washington, DC) – Today, at 11 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser will kick off her Safer, Stronger DC Summer Crime Initiative – a coordinated effort to reduce violent crime in specific areas in the District through strategic prevention and coordinated enforcement. Every year for nearly ten years, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has identified focus areas that have experienced a high density of violence and utilized all available resources, including collaborative outreach, to prevent violent crime in those areas during the summer months, running from May 1 – August 31.

Following the press conference, Mayor Bowser will lead a door-to-door canvass to engage Marshall Heights residents and business owners about the Summer Crime Initiative and address neighborhood safety concerns. The canvass will begin at Benning Park Community Center.
